Why You Need a VPN for Torrenting
When you join a BitTorrent swarm, every peer in that swarm can see your IP address. That includes copyright enforcement agencies, your ISP, and anyone else monitoring the swarm. A VPN replaces your real IP with the VPN server's IP, making you one of potentially thousands of users sharing that address.
P2P-Friendly Servers
Not all VPN servers allow P2P traffic. Some providers restrict torrenting to specific servers in P2P-friendly jurisdictions. Choose a provider that is transparent about which servers allow torrenting and routes P2P traffic automatically. Mullvad, ProtonVPN, and Private Internet Access all have solid P2P policies with designated fast servers.
Kill Switch is Non-Negotiable
A kill switch cuts your internet connection if the VPN drops unexpectedly. Without it, a momentary VPN disconnect exposes your real IP to the swarm, potentially for minutes before you notice. Enable the kill switch before you open any torrent client. This is the single most important feature for torrenting privacy.
Speed Considerations
WireGuard dramatically outperforms OpenVPN for torrenting speeds. The encryption overhead is lower and the connection is more stable under high-bandwidth sustained transfers. If your VPN offers WireGuard, use it. Servers geographically close to you reduce latency and maintain better speeds than distant servers.
Port Forwarding
Some VPN providers offer port forwarding, which improves your torrent upload speeds and helps you maintain seeding connections. Mullvad and ProtonVPN support port forwarding on some server configurations. It is not essential but noticeably improves performance if available.
