Why Most VPNs Fail for Streaming
Streaming platforms actively block VPN IP addresses. When a service detects that many users share the same IP, it flags it as a VPN and blocks access. VPNs that work for streaming rotate their server IPs regularly and maintain a large enough pool that detection becomes difficult.
Netflix
Netflix runs one of the most aggressive VPN-detection systems. ExpressVPN and NordVPN both maintain consistent access to US Netflix libraries. ExpressVPN is generally more reliable for Netflix across multiple regions but costs more. NordVPN's SmartPlay technology routes streaming traffic through specialized servers that bypass geo-blocks.
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is only available in the UK. Connecting to a UK server through most major VPNs works, but iPlayer has increased its detection in recent years. Surfshark and ExpressVPN both maintain good track records here. Free VPNs rarely work with iPlayer.
Disney Plus and HBO Max
Disney Plus is somewhat easier to unblock than Netflix. Most premium VPNs handle it without issues. HBO Max (now Max) requires a US IP. Connect to a US server and clear your browser cookies before connecting if you hit a detection wall.
Speed Considerations
For 4K streaming you need at least 25 Mbps through the VPN tunnel. WireGuard-based connections consistently outperform OpenVPN for throughput. If you experience buffering, switch to a less-loaded server in the same country rather than switching protocol.
