Why Streaming Services Block VPNs
Streaming platforms license content by region. A show available on Netflix US may not be licensed for Netflix UK because a different broadcaster holds the rights there. VPNs let users appear to be in a different country, bypassing those regional restrictions. This violates the platform's licensing agreements. Streaming services invest in VPN detection technology: they maintain lists of known VPN IP address ranges, detect datacenter IP addresses (most VPN servers), and use behavioral signals to flag accounts that seem to be using proxies.
The VPN Arms Race
Good VPN providers respond to blocks by rotating IP addresses, obtaining residential IP pools (harder to detect as VPN), and dedicating specific servers to streaming use. Netflix in particular is aggressive about blocking -- it detects and blocks new VPN IP ranges within days or weeks. The result is that VPN streaming performance varies week to week. A VPN that works perfectly for Netflix today may be blocked next month.
Which VPNs Work Best for Streaming in 2026
ExpressVPN: consistently strong across Netflix US, UK, Australia, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu. Uses Lightway protocol and frequently rotates IPs. Considered the most reliable option for streaming. NordVPN: good coverage, 'SmartPlay' technology dedicated to streaming. Works for Netflix US and several other regions reliably. Surfshark: excellent value, works with most major services. Strong performance for BBC iPlayer specifically. Private Internet Access: large server network, good for US-specific content. More variable for international services. Free VPNs: essentially none work reliably for streaming. The IP ranges are the most-blocked and least-maintained.
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is technically free but UK-only. It requires a UK IP and a TV licence declaration (honor system). Most premium VPNs with UK servers work for iPlayer, but block rates are high -- BBC actively detects and blocks VPN IPs. ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and NordVPN have the strongest track record for iPlayer specifically.
Practical Tips
If a server is blocked, try a different server in the same country before giving up -- the VPN may have multiple IP ranges and one may still work. Enable the VPN's streaming-optimized server option if available (ExpressVPN MediaStreamer, NordVPN SmartPlay). Clear cookies and cache after connecting to avoid being served the wrong region's content from a previous session. If your account was previously associated with a different country, some platforms remember this and may not update immediately.
