Why Streaming Blocks VPNs
Streaming platforms have licensing deals that restrict content to specific regions. Netflix's US library is different from the UK library. BBC iPlayer is UK-only. These platforms are contractually required to enforce geo-restrictions, and they do so by detecting and blocking known VPN IP addresses. Every time a VPN provider adds new servers, the streaming platforms update their blocklists. It is a continuous arms race.
Which VPNs Work With Netflix in 2026
ExpressVPN: consistently works with Netflix US, UK, Japan, and most other regions. Fast enough for 4K streaming. NordVPN: works with Netflix US and several other regions; occasionally has servers that get blocked and rotated. Surfshark: works well, good for multi-device households. The key: use servers specifically labeled as 'optimized for streaming' in the VPN app.
Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime
Disney+ has improved its VPN detection. ExpressVPN and NordVPN work for most regions. HBO Max is more aggressive -- fewer VPNs reliably bypass it. Amazon Prime Video varies by title: some content bypasses geo-blocks, some does not, even with a working VPN.
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is one of the stricter services. It requires not just a UK IP but also a UK postal code in your account. ExpressVPN maintains dedicated servers that consistently work. Mullvad also works for many users.
When Your VPN Gets Blocked
If your VPN stops working on a streaming service: first try switching to a different server in the same country. Then try a server labeled 'streaming-optimized'. If still blocked, contact VPN support -- they often have specific servers for specific services. If nothing works, the service has updated its blocklist and the VPN needs to add new IP ranges.
