VPN for Travel: Country-by-Country Guide 2026

9 June 2026

Why You Need a VPN When Traveling

When you travel internationally, your home streaming services may be unavailable due to geo-restrictions. Public Wi-Fi in hotels, airports, and cafes is frequently unsecured. Some countries actively block websites and services you rely on daily. A VPN addresses all three problems, but only if you set it up before you arrive.

Countries with Heavy Censorship

China blocks most Western internet services including Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most VPNs. The Great Firewall is sophisticated and blocks VPN protocols aggressively. Only a handful of providers with obfuscation technology work reliably in China: ExpressVPN and Astrill have the best track record, but even these can be intermittently blocked. Download and configure your VPN before entering China.

Russia requires VPN providers to register with the government and block banned content. Most major international VPN providers do not comply and are blocked. Similar restrictions apply in Iran, where most VPNs are blocked but some obfuscated connections still work.

Countries Where VPNs Are Restricted or Illegal

Belarus, North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Iraq have outright bans or near-total restrictions on VPN use. In the UAE and Oman, using a VPN for legal purposes is permitted but using one to access blocked content is a criminal offense. Saudi Arabia blocks many VPNs but does not explicitly ban them. Check current regulations before traveling to any of these destinations.

Countries Where VPNs Are Fully Legal and Work Well

EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most of Southeast Asia have no VPN restrictions. In these countries, focus on choosing a fast VPN server close to your destination and ensuring your kill switch is enabled on public Wi-Fi.

Practical Setup Before You Travel

Install your VPN and test it at home. Download the server configurations for your destination country. If traveling to a high-censorship country, download the obfuscated or stealth protocol option specifically. Note the VPN app's customer support contact in case you need help once abroad.
