SVT Play is a great service. But you don’t get such great service when you’re abroad. Thanks to GEO-restriction, what you mostly get is blocked. How can you get around that to access SVT wherever you are? Read on!
What is SVT Play?
SVT Play is a Swedish streaming service offering a similar explerience to Netflix or Hulu. In other ways, it’s closer to the BBC Iplayer deal: It’s national TV, plus, on the internet. News, current affairs, sport, imported and domestic detective series and dramas, reality shows and more: a complete TV experience.
It even offers automatic translations based on your location — here’s the UK English version:
‘This program can only be seen in Sweden.’
Try to watch SVT play with an IP address outside Sweden, and you’re going to see that message a lot. That means missing out on satire with Jesper Rhönndall, though fans will be pleased to hear that Såska det Låta is available globally.
How to stream SVT Play outside Sweden
The solution is simple enough in theory. SVT Play uses your IP address — IP-nummer — to figure out where you are in the world. Unlike a lot of streaming services, it comes right out and tells you so:
So you need a Swedish IP address.
There are a couple of ways to get one. You could use a Socks5 proxy, or an HTTP proxy; either of these will reroute your traffic to another server before connecting you to your destination website.
If that server is in Sweden, you’re away!
While those options can be effective, they aren’t very secure; all your traffic goes out just as unencrypted and vulnerable as ever.
You’re entrusting your traffic to another layer of machines that you don’t control, and there’s no additional security. So your ISP, for instance, can still see everything you’re doing.
Some proxy server providers will also monitor what you do and then sell or supply that information to marketers, law enforcement or anyone else they like; remember, they can see everything that goes through their servers!
That’s why when you have to choose a tool to unblock georestricted content, the gold standard is a VPN.
We recommend a VPN that’s known to be effective at unblocking streaming services worldwide. That way, you’re both safer and more likely to be able to access your content.
Which VPN is best for accessing SVT Play outside Sweden?
There are several VPNs that will do the job of allowing you to watch alll of SVT Play’s content library wherever you are. Here I am, connecting with my VPN:
Before it was blocked; now, it’s ready to play, because SVT thinks I’m in Sweden.
We recommend VyprVPN. Its premium package includes the Chameleon Protocol for disguising the fact that you’re using a VPN at all.
Unlike obfuscated servers, Chameleon Protocol affects all your traffic right at the source, meaning it’s impossible to block by blacklistng servers and impossible to detect with standard blocking technology.
